Japan has become a favorite destination for Indian travelers, renowned for its futuristic attractions, stunning skyscrapers, delicious KitKats, and iconic Mount Fuji. If you’re considering a trip to Japan soon, there’s an update for you. The Japanese government plans to revise several travel-related fees, including an increase in airport departure taxes and visa charges, as well as a new pre-entry screening fee. This initiative aims to enhance infrastructure and support public projects. As a result, travelers may find that Japan’s traditionally affordable experience could soon come with a higher cost, starting from the 2026 financial year.
Although this news may seem somewhat disheartening and unjust, Japan’s government believes that the proposed fee increases have been long overdue and will help align the country with international standards. Currently, Japan’s travel expenses are among the most affordable globally, and officials feel that these adjustments are essential for maintaining a sustainable system. The additional revenue will be allocated to enhance airport amenities, improve security measures, and even fund domestic education initiatives.
In terms of visa processing, Japan intends to raise its visa application fees for the first time in nearly half a century. The new rates will be more comparable to those charged by the United States and various European countries.
Japan’s Visa Fee Will Change After Nearly 50 Years
Since 1978, the cost for a single-entry visa to Japan has stayed around ¥3,000 (approximately ₹1,735), while a multiple-entry visa costs about ¥6,000 (around ₹3,471). Both of these fees are significantly lower than those in the United States and many European nations; however, that may soon change. Furthermore, Japan is also considering increasing its ‘departure tax,’ currently set at ¥1,000 (approximately ₹578), which applies to both foreign visitors and Japanese residents. These adjustments could take effect starting in 2026.
Additionally, beginning in the 2028 financial year, Japan will introduce the Japan Electronic System for Travel Authorization (JESTA). This system will necessitate a pre-arrival screening for travelers from visa-exempt countries and will involve a fee similar to the US version, which is currently around US$40 (approximately INR 3,500).
The Japanese government is expected to start implementing the new fee structure in the 2026 fiscal year. While specific timelines have not been finalized, the changes will likely be introduced gradually.
