Japan is known as one of the most advanced nations globally and is quite famous for its iconic bullet trains. And as India prepares to launch its first-ever bullet train along the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route, Japan has agreed to donate two advanced Shinkansen trains – the E5 and E3 series for trial runs. These trains will play a vital role in developing the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor (MAHSR). By early 2026, one train from each series will be supplied to India, where they will be used for testing and inspection.
The gifted Shinkansen trains will help gather essential data concerning India’s environmental challenges, such as extreme heat and dust levels. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail project is a key component of India’s infrastructure growth, and using these Japanese trains will provide valuable insights into the operational dynamics in Indian conditions, as reported by the Japan Times. Additionally, the trials will assist in the potential future development of the E10 trains, which are expected to be introduced in India by the early 2030s.
When it comes to the bullet train project, most of the funding for this ambitious bullet train project comes from low-interest loans in yen provided by the Japanese government, covering around 80% of the total costs. Nevertheless, with escalating expenses, both governments are looking to establish a new loan framework, which may facilitate the introduction of E10 trains during an upcoming bilateral summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and officials in Japan.
