Iran Scraps Visa-Free Travel For Indians: Key Changes Explained

A number of nations around the world, including Thailand, Laos, the Philippines, and Malaysia, allow Indian passport holders to enter without a visa. Iran used to be included in this list, but the Iranian government announced on Monday, 17 November 2025, that it will be ending its one-way visa exemption for Indian travelers, effective November 22. After this date, Indian citizens will be required to obtain a visa to enter Iran or even to use the country’s airports for transfers.

Previously, Indian tourists could enter Iran without a visa under specific conditions as part of Iran’s strategy to enhance tourism and strengthen relationships with Asian countries. Now, all Indian citizens with regular passports must apply for an Iranian visa before travel, possess it while boarding, and even require a visa for airport transit through Iran.

The Iranian government has recently implemented a measure to halt the misuse of its visa waiver program, which has been exploited in the wrong way.

Ministry of External Affairs Issues Travel Advisory For Iran

Following the suspension of visa-free entry for Indian passport holders by the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Ministry of External Affairs, India, has issued a travel advisory. This advisory highlights concerns regarding multiple incidents where Indian citizens have been lured to Iran under the pretenses of employment or promises of onward travel to other countries. Many were misled by taking advantage of the visa exemption for ordinary Indian passport holders, only to find themselves kidnapped upon arrival and held for ransom.

In response, the Government of Iran has suspended the visa waiver for ordinary Indian passport holders effective November 22, 2025.

All Indian nationals planning to visit Iran are strongly urged to exercise caution and refrain from engaging with agents claiming to offer visa-free travel or transit options to third countries through Iran.
