Leh is famous for the stunning Pangong Lake and some of the highest motorable passes in the world, such as Khardung La Pass, Uming La Pass, and Mig La Pass. However, it is also known for its extreme winter conditions, with temperatures sometimes dropping to -35 degrees Celsius. And now, on January 5, 2026, Leh experienced heavy snowfall, which caused all flights at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport to be halted, impacting both arrivals and departures. IndiGo Airlines issued a travel advisory stating that they temporarily suspended operations due to the snowfall.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Leh recorded a low of -9.6°C on the same day, with 0.6 cm of new snowfall in the past 24 hours. IndiGo shared this information on X (formerly Twitter), while SpiceJet also warned travelers that weather issues could affect flights in and out of Leh.

The IMD forecasted dense fog and cold spells for various regions, including Srinagar, Jammu, and Chandigarh, with snowfall expected in these areas too. They also noted that foggy and cold conditions were likely in parts of Jammu–Kashmir–Ladakh and other northern states until early January. Cold waves were predicted for Punjab, Haryana, and nearby locations during this period.
