Indian Railways To Roll Out Airport-Style Baggage Rules With Screening, Weight Limits, And More

Indian Railways

Flying is a convenient way to travel, allowing you to reach your destination quickly and comfortably. However, air travel has its restrictions, particularly with luggage limits. For domestic flights in India, the allowance is typically 15 kg for checked baggage and 7 kg for carry-on. Because of this, many travelers with excess luggage choose Indian Railways instead to avoid high airline fees. However, this may soon change as Indian Railways plans to introduce an airport-style baggage service. Read on to know more.

Indian Railways is set to introduce tougher baggage rules similar to those found in airports, starting at various major stations across India. These new guidelines will establish baggage weight limits based on travel class: 70 kg for First AC, 50 kg for AC Two Tier, 40 kg for both AC Three Tier and Sleeper Class, and 35 kg for General Class. Passengers carrying more than the allowed weight but within a slight margin will be subject to standard excess charges. Those exceeding the limits significantly may face penalties.

Indian Railways To Roll Out This Approach In Select Stations For Now

All luggage must be screened and weighed before entering the platform, with fines imposed for any excess or oversized items. Officials state that these measures are intended to enhance passenger safety, ease congestion, and improve operational efficiency, though some travelers are concerned about potential inconveniences and extra costs.

To further streamline this process, Indian Railways is implementing a uniform approach that aligns with airport standards for both security and passenger comfort. Key stations like Prayagraj, Kanpur, Mirzapur, and Aligarh will utilize electronic weighing systems to check luggage weight. Bicycles and scooters will be exempt from the baggage limit and won’t affect the allowed carry-on weight.

Additionally, starting in December 2026, only ticket holders might get the chance to enter railway stations, according to reports. Tickets will act like “boarding passes,” and non-travelers accompanying passengers will need to purchase a “visitor pass” to access the station.
