Indian Railways Eases Emergency Quota Rules, Boosts Access For General Passengers

68 Jammu-Katra Trains Cancelled Amid Heavy Rains

If you’re looking to book a train ride in India soon, there’s an important update from Indian Railways that you should know about. Following changes to the Tatkal booking procedures and the introduction of E-Aadhar as a requirement, Indian Railways has now revisited its Emergency Quota Rules. Passengers are now required to submit their requests earlier than they previously did. This modification is part of the Railway Ministry’s recent initiative to enhance operational efficiency by generating reservation charts eight hours before train departures.

The Emergency Quota (EQ) seats on trains are designated for VIPs, railway personnel, and passengers facing medical emergencies. However, the system has faced issues due to improper use and late submissions, which have delayed the finalization of passenger lists and caused issues for those traveling. To improve this situation, a new rule now requires passengers to request an EQ ticket at least one day before their journey.

Emergency Quota Rules Will Be In Place For All Types Of Travelers, Including VIPs

Requests for EQ tickets for trains departing between midnight and 2 PM must be submitted to the EQ cell by noon the previous day. For trains leaving after 2 PM and before midnight, requests should be sent in by 4 PM the day before travel. The authorities have stated that any requests made on the same day as the train’s departure will not be processed.

On Sundays and public holidays, requests for accommodation using the Emergency Quota should be submitted during office hours on the last working day before the holiday. The Railway Board’s reservation cell receives many requests from VIPs and senior officials, and the ministry is committed to managing these requests fairly and responsibly.

Indian Railways has requested all staff to follow the new guidelines closely to ensure timely processing and prevent delays in train schedules. This adjustment is intended to enhance the ticketing system, allowing for faster updates on waiting list ticket confirmations and reducing the uncertainty for regular travelers.
