Indian Railways has consistently prioritized enhancing travel experiences for its passengers, especially focusing on senior citizens, women, and persons with disabilities. Recently, the railway service has implemented several updates aimed at creating a more convenient, safe, and comfortable journey for all travelers.
In a recent Lok Sabha session, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the innovative measures taken by Indian Railways to improve accommodations for these groups. The railways now automatically allocate lower berths to senior citizens, female passengers aged 45 and above, and pregnant women during the booking process. This means that these passengers no longer need to make specific requests for lower berths; they will automatically receive a Priority Lower Berth Allotment, subject to availability. This change is part of the railways’ commitment to inclusivity and enhancing travel arrangements for all.
When it comes to Priority Lower Berth Allotment, Indian Railways reserves between six to seven lower berths in Sleeper Class coaches, four to five in Air Conditioned 3 Tier (3AC), and three to four in Air Conditioned 2 Tier (2AC) compartments, adapting these numbers based on the coach configuration of each train.
Priority Lower Berth Allotment Depends On Availability Of Berths
This initiative is a part of the broader commitment to provide a more accommodating atmosphere for those who may require additional support during their journeys.
Additionally, the reservation quota for persons with disabilities is effectively implemented in all mail and express trains, including premium services such as Rajdhani and Shatabdi.

Each of these trains provides four berths in Sleeper Class (with two specifically for lower berths), four in 3AC (also including two lower berths), and four seats in Reserved Second Sitting or Air-conditioned Chair Car (CC).
When lower berths become available during the journey, senior citizens, individuals with disabilities, and pregnant women who initially booked middle or upper berths are given priority for reallocation.
To further enhance accessibility, dedicated compartments for persons with disabilities are available on nearly all mail and express trains, featuring wider entrances, spacious berths, and accessible restrooms equipped with necessary amenities. The latest Vande Bharat trains have also been designed with inclusivity in mind, ensuring that all passengers benefit from a safe, comfortable, and seamless travel experience.
