On the evening of February 18, 2025, the town experienced an intense hailstorm that residents claimed was unprecedented in recent decades. The storm engulfed the area, blanketing it with a thick layer of ice, which sparked a flurry of activity on social media as people shared images and videos of the snowy scene.
The storm hit around 7:50 PM, following a period of strong gusts of wind, and persisted for over 20 minutes. As a result, the ground was completely coated in white ice, transforming the landscape. The hailstorm primarily impacted areas from Garh Salboni to Khataranga, with significant effects felt in Sakpara and the IIT Kharagpur campus. This unexpected weather phenomenon left residents in disbelief, as they struggled to recall a similar occurrence in their lifetimes.

A Facebook page called “Weather Of Kolkata” claimed that the prediction for a hailstorm had been made a week in advance. The post read:
“18.02.25 / Kharagpur Hailstorm Massive hail caused significant damage in Kharagpur and Medinipur, including the IIT Kharagpur campus. This event was anticipated by us since a week ago, with alerts issued as early as February 12, 2025. It was indicated that the third week of February would see an increase in hailstorm activity. The amount of hail activity was expected to be substantial, with more events projected for this week and into the weekend.”
Well, this incident is quite shocking and clearly proves that Global Warming is a REAL deal.
