Travel Guide: How To Plan A Trip To Sikkim

Permits Required For Indians

There is no need for a general entry permit for Indians to visit most places in Sikkim. But they will need Protected Area Permits (PAP) to enter restricted border zones like Lachen, Lachung, Gurudongmar Lake, and Yumthang Valley, which is basically North Sikkim. It is also mandatory to visit Tsomgo Lake, Nathula Pass, and Baba Mandir in East Sikkim.

Permits Required For Foreigners

Foreigners require an Inner Line Permit (ILP) or Restricted Area Permit (RAP) to enter Sikkim, plus Protected Area Permits (PAP) for restricted border zones. The rules for permits have become stricter since 2025.

How To Obtain a Permit?

Foreigners can obtain Restricted Area Permits (RAP/ILP) for Sikkim entry online via the e-FRRO portal (indianfrro.gov.in) after arriving in India, or at entry points like Rangpo/Siliguri offices with a passport, visa, photos, and itinerary.

Indians can get Protected Area Permits (PAP) for North Sikkim/Tsomgo via registered tour operators or the Sikkim Tourism portal. You will have to submit ID proof and photos for same-day issuance.

Best Time To Visit

The best time to visit Sikkim is divided into three major windows. One is between March to June, the second is between October to December, and the third is between December to February.

March to June: Sikkim’s weather in this period witnesses a soft change from cool springs to mild summers. If you love trekking, this is the right time to go on treks in Sikkim, right before the monsoon arrives. There is ample sunlight outside with clear skies, making it perfect for outdoor activities.

October to December: In this period, the weather of Sikkim beautifully transitions from crisp autumn to chilly winter. The sky is clear with early snow on the mountain peak. With vibrant green foliage everywhere, it is the best time to visit monasteries that are nestled amid them.

December to February: This period is known as the peak winter period when Sikkim generally witnesses snowfall and frozen lakes. January stands out as the prime month for heavy, consistent snowfall across North and East Sikkim.
