From Sushi to Sakura: How A 2019 Trip To Japan Stole My Heart and Changed My Soul

Hey there! I’m Yogita, and I proudly call myself a hodophile, which means I really love to travel. For me, traveling isn’t just about checking places off a list; it’s a way of life. I cherish meeting new people, discovering different cultures, and sharing conversations that open my mind to new perspectives. I’ve visited 10 countries and explored various places in India, but Japan always holds a special place in my heart.

Back in 2019, my sister and I traveled to Japan when it wasn’t a hot spot for Indian tourists at all. Believe it or not, we saw only about ten other Indian travelers during our 14-day trip! I’m so grateful I got to experience Japan before it became such a popular destination.

The Japanese people are some of the sweetest I’ve ever met. They are genuinely kind, helpful, and accommodating. One night in Tokyo, after getting lost at midnight with our phones dead and no battery in our power bank, we found ourselves in a tricky situation. We asked a lady at a convenience store for directions, and instead of just pointing the way, she said, “I don’t speak English well, and you don’t speak Japanese, but let me help you get to your hostel.” And she did! That 20-minute walk was such a beautiful act of kindness that I’ll never forget.

Japan taught me so much – not just about kindness, but also about cherishing culture, history, and traditions. Even as one of the most advanced and futuristic countries in the world, Japan places immense value on where it comes from, reminding me that knowing your roots is essential for figuring out where you want to go.

The punctuality, the locals helping with sign language despite the language barrier, and the way everyone follows the rules because they choose to rather than feeling forced – it all inspired me and left me in awe.

I know I might sound a little sentimental, but there’s something magical about Japan. From the dazzling skyscrapers of Tokyo to the serene streets of Kyoto, the fashionable vibe of Ginza, the energy of Osaka, and the peaceful countryside of Nara, there’s just a refreshing quality to it all.

During my 14 days there, I met so many people who went out of their way to customize meals for me since I don’t eat meat. They made sure I caught every train on time, and the kindness shown while dining, shopping, and just exchanging smiles while crossing the streets made me realize that Japan will always be my favorite country.

The convenience of traveling around Japan with their bullet trains and metros, enjoying coffee from Seven Eleven, and trying out local vegetarian dishes made me feel right at home. Even after visiting 10 countries since then, if someone asks me about my favorite, I don’t hesitate – it’s Japan, without a doubt.

I can’t emphasize enough how unique Japan is. You have to experience it for yourself to truly understand. It has a piece of my heart, and I know it will always have my soul.
