Himachal Pradesh boasts a wide range of stunning locations, from popular spots like Shimla and Manali to the breathtaking Spiti Valley. The state’s beauty continues to captivate visitors, and recently, the Himachal government unveiled plans to develop 77 new eco-tourism sites. This initiative, part of a new eco-tourism policy, aims to enhance various forest areas throughout the state, with an anticipated revenue of INR 200 crore in the next five years.
The goal is to draw tourists in a way that safeguards the environment while also creating job opportunities and boosting the local economy sustainably. If you’re curious about what eco-tourism entails, here’s a brief explanation.
Eco-tourism focuses on exploring natural areas without causing damage to the environment. Himachal’s Eco-Tourism Policy 2024 is designed to promote this concept, balancing tourism with the preservation of nature.
New Eco-Tourism Sites Will be Developed In Diverse Locations Across Himachal Pradesh
The program will roll out 77 eco-tourism sites in diverse locations including Shimla, Kullu, Mandi, Bilaspur, Rampur, Solan, Nahan, Hamirpur, Nalagarh, Dharamshala, Palampur, Chamba, Dalhousie, Nurpur, and Reckong Peo.
So far, eco-tourism operators have been appointed for seven key sites, including Potter Hill and Shoghi in Shimla, Solang Nallah in Kullu, and Kasol in Parvati Valley, with additional sites being developed in stages. One can look forward to engaging in eco-friendly activities such as trekking, bird watching, forest camping, jungle walks, homestays, and nature interpretation trails.
Local eco-tourism committees have been established in each forest area to oversee these initiatives. Training programs for local youth are underway, with over 70 nature guides and 135 multi-purpose workers being prepared by the Himachal Pradesh Eco-Tourism Society (HPECOSOC). This effort not only provides employment but also fosters a sense of responsibility toward the natural environment.
Furthermore, to structure this a bit better, the Himachal government has launched a website which lets tourists to reserve over 100 forest rest houses and camping spots through its website.
This initiative will enhance tourists’ experiences with nature and the various recreational activities Himachal Pradesh offers, all while boosting the state’s economy and preserving its natural resources.
