Himachal Pradesh is one of India’s most charming and popular states. Renowned for its breathtaking snow-covered peaks, rich culture, and charming hill stations, the state has recently introduced a new initiative aimed at supporting female travelers. Himachal Pradesh has launched the ‘She Travel Policy.’ This initiative aims to enhance safety and comfort for women traveling alone, assuring they feel secure and respected during their journeys through both urban and mountainous areas.
Currently, women make up 18 per cent of solo visitors to Himachal Pradesh, and the government aims to increase this figure to 35 per cent within three years. To achieve this goal, officials and tour operators have been invited to review the She Travel Policy draft, contributing valuable insights.
Key elements of the She Travel Policy focus on improving safety measures, establishing reliable support systems, and addressing concerns that solo female travelers may have. The tourism sector will examine safety protocols across 200 destinations, with local authorities identifying potential risks, evaluating security features, and enhancing surveillance through upgraded lighting and CCTV systems.
She Travel Policy Will Also Have Safety Marshals Called SheGuard
To further strengthen safety, the state plans to introduce a special unit of trained female safety marshals called ‘SheGuard.’ These professionals will be stationed at important tourist locations and accommodations to offer help and reassurance to women traveling solo. A dedicated section on the state tourism office’s website is also being developed to provide female travelers with essential safety tips, travel advice, and resources in one convenient place.
Furthermore, all officially recognized hotels and guesthouses will be required to install CCTV cameras and emergency panic buttons. Properties meeting established safety standards will receive certification as women-friendly accommodations. In addition to creating this gender-sensitive tourism framework, Himachal Pradesh aims to conduct annual gender audits for continuous improvement, ultimately working to diminish incidents of harassment and unethical behavior within the tourism sector.
Although every place should generally feel safe for female travelers without the need for specific policies, we commend Himachal Pradesh’s efforts to make the state more comfortable for women. What are your thoughts on this?
