ToggleWhat Is Caravan Tourism?
To begin with, caravan tourism is also known as recreational vehicle (RV) tourism. It involves traveling and exploring various destinations while living in an RV or caravan. This mobile home on wheels is equipped with most amenities you’d find in a hotel room. From comfortable beds and compact kitchenettes to fully functional bathrooms and entertainment systems, these caravans are like mini, portable hotels for travelers who’re always chasing their next wanderlust adventure!
Caravan tourism is a popular form of travel for many in the West; however, it is still in its early stages in India. The concept will gradually gain popularity as more people become familiar with this form of travel in a more understandable, accessible, and affordable manner.
Caravan Parks: Redefining Luxury Tourism In Gujarat
The culturally rich and diverse state of Gujarat is all set to usher in a new era of its tourism with the introduction of caravan parks. These parks will be set up across diverse landscapes in the state, including scenic beaches, mountainsides, forests, and heritage sites. As of June 2025, TCGL has planned the setup of not one, not two, but twenty-nine caravan parks!
These parks will be set up in some of Gujarat’s most well-known and culturally significant tourist attractions. Be it the white desert of Dholavira, the lush-green Polo Forest and Saputara, the divine Somnath temple in Gir, or the stunning Miyani Beach in Porbandar, these caravan parks will be set up strategically in order to open up new and unexplored destinations in Gujarat to road-trippers.
Here are some other locations where the caravan parks will be set up:
- Rudrani, Kutch
- Dhordo, Kutch
- Medak Bet, Little Rann of Kutch
- Thol, Mehsana
- Vadatalav, Panchmahal
- Mangadh Hill, Aravalli
- Ratanmahal, Dahod
- Wilson Hill, Valsad
- Ahmedpur Mandvi, Gir Somnath
- Bhalchhel, Junagadh
- Osam Hill, Rajkot
- Nalsarovar, Ahmedabad
Facilities In The Caravan Parks
Gujarat Tourism has officially announced the commencement of the tender process for the development of these caravan parks across 29 sites in the state. These parks will be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities like parking bays, water and electricity connections, sanitation units, as well as waste management systems.
Not just that, but the caravans themselves will likely feature most of the amenities mentioned above. Be it’s comfortable beds or functional kitchenettes, a caravan needs to be equipped with basic amenities. Many caravans can house somewhere between 2 to 4 people, but some can host about 6 to 8 people. This makes this a convenient and comfortable way of traveling and exploring the world at your own pace!
Caravan Tourism In India
Caravan tourism is currently in its nascent stage in India, slowly picking up in pace across the country. And now, the state of Gujarat will be one of the pioneers in introducing the concept of caravan tourism. Caravan operators are offering these services in Maharashtra, Karnataka, and parts of the North-East. However, Gujarat will be the first state to implement this tourism policy on such a large scale.
The Ministry of Tourism is planning to undertake extensive advertisement campaigns to promote the concept of caravan tourism. This will not only create more awareness about this form of travel but also attract investments in the caravan tourism infrastructure. The EOI proposed by TCGL is expected to generate ideas as well as gauge industry expectations for the development of caravan tourism infrastructure in Gujarat. This not only includes inputs from caravan suppliers, but also inputs from tour operators and infrastructure developers.
Caravan Tourism: A Slow And Sustainable Future Of Travel In Gujarat
With the arrival of caravan parks across Gujarat, the state will provide a more experiential form of tourism to enthusiastic travelers. While this form of travel allows you to explore places at your own pace, it also becomes a form of slow and sustainable tourism.
By boosting the local economy, these caravan parks become a convenient and comfortable way of travel and leisure. The state of Gujarat will unveil a new chapter in its tourism by allowing travelers to set up their routes as well shortly. While details of the cost of these caravans have not been disclosed yet, this form of travel will certainly pick up in India with the right infrastructure and promotion.
Summing Up
Gone are the days when traveling to different places meant taking care of a ton of things like food, accommodation, and transportation. Caravan tourism is now about to change the game by clubbing all of these aspects of travel into a single caravan – a luxurious, comfortable, and efficient mode of travel! With Gujarat proposing an EOI for the same, other states are also expected to follow in the footsteps of the state and introduce caravan parks in their respective states. So, when are you setting out on an adventure on wheels?
