Gudi Padwa 2026: Origin, Significance, Date, Celebrations

Origins Of Gudi Padwa

The festival is typically celebrated in Maharashtra and Goa, being considered the ‘Marathi New Year’. The word ‘Padwa’ comes from the Sanskrit word ‘Pratipada’, which means the ‘first day’ of the lunar fortnight. It falls on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, which marks the beginning of spring and the new year.

There is no clear evidence suggesting the inception of Gudi Padwa; however, there are many stories rooted in Indian mythology as well as daily life back in ancient times. One legend says that the masses began erecting the ‘gudi’ to welcome Lord Rama, Sita, and Laxman from 14 years of exile. Some other accounts say that the festival was started by farmers to mark the beginning of the harvest season.

And it is not only celebrated in Maharashtra but also in other parts of India. There are similar New Year celebrations in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh as Ugadi, Cheti Chand in the Sindhi community, and Navroz or Nowruz in the Parsi community occurring at around the same time.

How Is Gudi Padwa Celebrated?

The festivities of Gudi Padwa mainly revolve around the ‘Gudi’. In Maharashtrian traditions, the Gudi is a symbol of prosperity, good fortune, and divinity. It is essentially a bamboo staff dressed with a bright, usually unused saree or cloth, and has a copper kalash placed upside down at the top of the staff. The staff is then decorated with flowers and gathi (a garland made of hardened sugar). The gudi is then erected at the main entrance or the window of the home, ideally facing east.

To gear up for these preparations, families usually wake up early in the morning. They clean the house, apply perfumed oils and bathe (abhyanga snan), draw rangoli in front of the main entrance, and decorate the doorway with mango leaf torans and strings of marigolds.

After erecting the gudi, families light up diyas and incense sticks and offer prayers. After offering prayers, everyone eats a small portion of neem leaves along with jaggery, tamarind, and sugar as a reminder of the bittersweet moments one can expect in the upcoming year.
