However, India now has its own stunning example – Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport’s Terminal 2. Imagine walking into an airport that feels like strolling through a lush garden oasis, where nature and design blend seamlessly. Terminal 2 at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport is fondly known as “Garden in the Sky”. The terminal is known for its mindful integration of biodiversity and nature, bringing in a very unique experience for all the passengers. 

The architecture of the terminal was done by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) and Grant Associates. Its design was created by keeping Bengaluru’s reputation as the “Garden City” in mind, leading to reimagining air travel by immersing travelers in green landscapes. 

It has set a new benchmark for airports worldwide with its not just functional but transformative design. The terminal has green infrastructure, innovative passenger amenities, a hint of art and culture, and the use of sustainable practices. 

Garden City’s Green Terminal

This terminal has over six lakh plants, which include ancient trees that are up to 800 years old and 180 rare species. All these plants are sourced from India’s ten diverse ecological habitats. 

There is a 10-meter-tall green wall that is adorned with over 450 plant species, which runs along the length of the terminal. It also has hanging gardens which are hung above the check-in hall. These are bell-shaped structure that has orchids, air plants, and moss embedded into them. 

They also have “Forest Belt,” which acts like an introduction to the arriving passengers to the living tapestry. It is said to be inspired by the beautiful and diverse Karnataka forests. 

From interior planting beds and rooftop gardens to green roofs and vertical gardens, the terminal hosts over 500 diverse plants. It is the first airport in India to receive the prestigious 5-Star Airport Terminal Rating by Skytrax. 

Amenities, Culture & More

The terminal’s lush gardens, with waterfalls and fountains, provide a serene ambiance, making it an ideal spot to unwind while waiting or shopping. It’s Orientation Garden, with its stunning waterfalls and rock formations, is a striking feature that separates the airport’s public area from the departure gates. 

The architecture and interiors of the terminal are inspired by local art, references, and materials throughout that celebrate the rich heritage of Karnataka. They have used natural stone, automated irrigation systems, and bamboo cladding, showing the terminal’s commitment to sustainability. 

Their upcoming Garden Pavilions will be 40 metres high and will offer 360-degree panoramic views. The features will include restaurants, lounges, and viewing galleries for all the International passengers. 

Terminal 2 was inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi on November 11, 2022, and it began operations from January 2023. It was built with a budget of ₹5,000 crore and covers about 2,55,00 square meters. It can handle up to 25 million passengers and has plans to expand further.
