When we talk about metro and public transportation, Delhi Metro is often the first thing that comes to mind. Recognized as the largest and most crowded metro rail system in India, it features more than 289 stations. To add more to its glory, Delhi Metro is set to introduce India’s first 3-Coach Train Corridor in 2028. Designed for short-distance commutes, it will run along an eight-kilometer route from Lajpat Nagar to Saket G Block and will include eight stations.
The 3-Coach Train Corridor is an innovative component of the metro project’s Phase IV, designed to enhance last-mile connectivity and streamline transfers between existing metro lines. Unlike traditional metro systems that operate with four, six, or eight coaches, this corridor will have a unique three-coach configuration for short-distance urban travel.
This compact train system aims to provide a more economical and flexible option, ensuring increased frequency and operational effectiveness while catering to a significant volume of daily passengers. It is being established through a careful evaluation of passenger demand, with a focus on delivering efficient and regular metro services for shorter trips.
When discussing the eight stations, they will include: Lajpat Nagar (where there is an interchange with the Pink and Violet lines), Andrews Ganj, GK-1, Chirag Delhi, Pushpa Bhawan, Saket Court, Pushpa Vihar, and Saket G Block (interchange with the Golden line).
Prime Minister Narendra Modi Laid Foundation For 3-Coach Train Corridor Project
Regarding the timeline for the project, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone in March 2024. Construction has begun, and the corridor is anticipated to be finished by 2028.
As of March 2025, the Delhi Metro runs ten color-coded lines spanning 289 stations across a network of 395 kilometers. Its services extend beyond Delhi, linking cities such as Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Gurugram, Noida, Bahadurgarh, and Ballabhgarh, thereby benefiting the wider National Capital Region (NCR). The ongoing expansion of the Delhi Metro is expected to improve accessibility and greatly decrease travel times for passengers.
