Chardham Yatra Significance

The Chardham Yatra holds immense significance in Hinduism as it is considered to be one of the most sacred pilgrimages in the country. It is said to cleanse them of their sins and frees them from the cycle of birth and death, ultimately attaining salvation (moksha).

The Chardham Yatra is characterized by visiting the origins of two of the most sacred rivers in Hinduism – Ganga and Yamuna. Kedarnath and Badrinath are two important temples, housing the shrines of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu respectively. Many pilgrims save up for this pilgrimage and aspire to undertake it at least once in their lives.

Yamunotri: The temple located in the Uttarkashi district, is dedicated to the Goddess Yamuna. She is the personification of the Yamuna River and is considered to be one of the most important deities in the Hindu pantheon.

Gangotri: Dedicated to Goddess Ganga, this temple is located at an elevation of more than 3,000 meters. Legends say that it is here that river Ganga descended on Earth after Lord Shiva released her from her locks.

Kedarnath: Located about more than 3,500 meters above sea level, Kedarnath is believed to be constructed by the Pandava brothers.

Badrinath: It is both a part of the Chota Char Dham and the original Char Dham pilgrimage in India. The temple here is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is one of the most sacred places in Hinduism.
