Bihar Gets World’s Largest Shivling At Virat Ramayan Mandir

World's Largest Shivling

Did you know that India is now home to the largest Shivling in the world? It’s true! On January 17, during a special ceremony at Bihar’s Virat Ramayan Mandir, a towering Shivling measuring 33 feet was unveiled, much to the joy of countless devotees who gathered to witness the event. Two cranes carefully positioned the intricately carved structure on its pedestal, lowering it gradually for everyone to see.

This remarkable World’s Largest Shivling, known as ‘Sahasralingam,’ weighs an impressive 210 metric tonnes and sits proudly on a specially designed base within the expansive grounds of the temple. Located in Motihari, East Champaran district, the event attracted large crowds of worshippers looking to celebrate this significant occasion. Engineers skillfully used cranes with a capacity of around 750 tonnes to ensure the granite monolith was perfectly placed.

World’s Largest Shivling: Key Details To Know

Crafted from a single block of black granite, this enormous Shivling took nearly ten years to complete in Pattikadu village, close to Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu. Its surface features 1,008 smaller lingams, adding to its beauty and significance. The installation occurred during the auspicious day of Magh Krishna Chaturdashi, filled with Vedic chants that echoed the importance of the moment.

The monolith began its lengthy journey from Tamil Nadu on November 21, 2025, traveling over 2,500 kilometers across various states before reaching Bihar. The temple housing the Shivling is the Virat Ramayan Mandir, which covers 125 acres and is expected to be fully operational by 2030. Upon completion, it will become the largest religious monument in the world, reaching a height of 405 feet (approximately 123 meters), with dimensions of 2,800 feet in length and 1,400 feet in width, accommodating up to 20,000 worshippers simultaneously.

Inspired by Angkor Wat, Rameswaram, and the Meenakshi Temple, this site features 18 garbhagrihas (sanctums). It is dedicated to various deities and boasts the world’s largest Shiva Linga, measuring 33 feet. The total cost of the project is INR 500 crore.

Temple officials believe this grand site will attract visitors not only from India but also from around the globe. It will also stimulate local tourism and enhance the area’s economy.
