Bengaluru Metrolite

Attention, residents of Namma Bengaluru! We have an exciting update for you – not about the weather or construction, but about transport! Bengaluru is gearing up to launch an innovative project that promises to transform your daily commute into a breeze. Bengaluru will soon introduce the Metrolite, a lighter and more streamlined metro system designed specifically for areas with lower passenger volumes. This cost-effective solution will primarily operate at street level. Read on to know more.

The Bengaluru Metrolite initiative is spearheaded by the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL) and aims to enhance urban mobility throughout the city. Set to become operational in 2027, each train will feature three coaches and accommodate between 300 and 425 people. The trains will run on standard gauge tracks (1,435 mm) with an average speed of 35 km/h and a top speed reaching 60 km/h.

Details regarding ticket prices will be announced later. However, one of the best features is that you won’t need a different card or payment method; the Metrolite ticket will merge seamlessly with the current metro fare system, allowing for easy QR code scanning and NFC-enabled transfers.

The Bengaluru Metrolite project will cover a 60 km corridor and will consist of three planned routes.

Line 1 will stretch for 30 km, running from Hebbal to JP Nagar along the ORR-West Line, and is set with the color orange, although the detailed project report (DPR) is still pending.

Line 2 will extend 14 km from the Magadi Road Toll Gate to Kadabagere, and currently has no color assigned, with its DPR also awaiting finalization.

Lastly, Line 3 will span 16 km, connecting Whitefield to Domlur, and similarly lacks an assigned color, with its DPR still in progress as well.

While the project is still in the approval and planning phase, the detailed project reports for all corridors have yet to be announced. Keep an eye out for more updates!
