Just a 2.5-hour drive or a one-hour ferry ride from Mumbai, Alibaug boasts some of Maharashtra’s most picturesque beaches along with stunning resorts, hotels, and AirBNBs – perfect for a relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. And if you are planning a quick trip to Alibaug soon, we have some exciting news! Similar to popular destinations like Goa and Pondicherry, you can now rent bikes and scooters in Alibaug, making it easier to explore the area.

As per reports in PTI, tourists visiting Alibaug for a weekend getaway can rent motorcycles and scooters, akin to what’s available in tourist hotspots like Goa and Kerala. The Maharashtra Transport Department has granted licenses to two service providers in Alibaug under the Rent a Motorcycle Scheme of 1997, which allows registered operators to offer two-wheelers for short-term rentals, compliant with safety and regulatory standards.

Alibaug Bike Rental Scheme Will Ease Local Commute

Although this scheme started back in 1997, it faced hurdles in its early years and was temporarily halted in 2015 due to opposition from local taxi and autorickshaw unions. However, in June 2025, the Maharashtra government revived the scheme after a nine-year pause, allowing regulated two-wheeler rental services to operate statewide. This initiative is expected to boost tourism while also creating job opportunities for residents.

Alibaug remains a favored spot year-round, especially on weekends and holidays. Tourists often visit nearby attractions like Murud-Janjira, Raigad Fort, and Tamhini Ghat. With the revival of the rental scheme, tourists can now legally hire two-wheelers from licensed providers, improving their travel experience in the region.
