The Legend Of The Sapphire Goddess
The history of the Sri Neelamani Durga Ammavaru temple is rooted in a miraculous legend that is passed down through generations. According to local folklore, the Gajapati Maharaj of Parlakhemundi was exploring the region near the Vansadhara River. At the same time, a local farmer was tilling his field stuck a hard object below the soil. When he dug the soil, he discovered a radiant idol that had a sapphire (Neelamani) like glow.
The Goddess appeared in the King’s dream and guided him to the spot where the idol was buried. Overwhelmed by the divine grace, the King commissioned the construction of the Sri Neelamani Durga Devi temple. She was established as the guardian deity of the surrounding villages and borderlands between Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.
