Why Was Mirzapur Movie Not Shot In Mirzapur?

Especially considering the fact that the series used Mirzapur’s streets, its carpet trade culture, and its surrounding regions as its primary setting. The decision not to shoot there was very much a deliberate choice rather than an unfortunate oversight. The movie deliberately expands outward into regions like Mumbai, Varanasi, Jaisalmer, and Jodhpur. This conscious creative decision by director Gurmeet Singh was taken to show new geography and to signal that the movie is not a continuation of the series. The decision drove home the point that this was a new chapter in the franchise’s story, built for a bigger screen and a broader audience. Where Was Mirzapur: The Movie Filmed?
1. Varanasi, The Ganga Returns
The shooting in Varanasi started in October 2025 and completed the entire Varanasi leg within the same month. Actor Ali Fazal confirmed the Varanasi wrap and noted the production was headed back to Mumbai shortly after. The city’s presence in Mirzapur: The Movie is significant. However, it is important to note that the specific ghats, streets, or heritage structures used during the movie’s shoot have not been publicly disclosed. A number of people confuse series locations like Moti Jheel Haveli (Kaleen Bhaiya’s mansion), Ramnagar Fort, and Uday Pratap College with the movie’s locations, which is certainly not the case. What is confirmed is the city’s continued hold on the franchise. Varanasi’s layered ancient, chaotic, spiritual, and brutal identity has always suited the Mirzapur universe.
2. Rajasthan: Jodhpur And Jaisalmer
The Rajasthan chapter of the movie is its most visually dramatic shift. After Varanasi wrapped, the production moved to Jaisalmer, followed by Jodhpur. Actor Ali Fazal shared behind-the-scenes footage from the Rajasthan schedule on social media and wrote: “MIRZAPUR THE FILM. Shooting now. Rajasthan Schedule. Thank you Jaisalmer and Jodhpur for the immense love and hospitality that knows no bounds.”
The Jodhpur part of the shoot wrapped around November 22, 2025. Fazal shared the BTS glimpses from this set, too, as the schedule concluded.
Jaisalmer has golden sandstone forts and desert expanses, whereas Jodhpur has a blue-washed old city and the Mehrangarh Fort backdrop. The decision to shoot across two of Rajasthan’s most visually distinct cities was also a deliberate artistic choice. It gave the film a cinematic scale hitherto unseen.
Following a short break, the team returned to Rajasthan in December 2025 for a concurrent schedule specifically dedicated to Ali Fazal’s portions as Guddu Pandit. This fourth leg of production was confirmed by The Hindu when it reported that Mirzapur: The Film had begun shooting in Rajasthan. Fazal, too, dropped a BTS video from the set. Filming wrapped in January 2026, with Fazal confirming the full schedule wrap on social media.
3. Mumbai, The Point Of Genesis
Mumbai played an important role not just as a shooting location, but also for other production-related events. For instance, the muhurat puja for Mirzapur: The Movie was held on August 14, 2025, at the Excel Entertainment office in Mumbai, with the main cast and crew in attendance. Principal photography, too, kicked off in Mumbai the following month. Pankaj Tripathi and Abhishek Banerjee began filming here before the production moved to Uttar Pradesh in October. After wrapping up the shoots in other parts of the country, the production then returned to Mumbai for additional schedules.
