For the first time in 48 years, Japan has announced an increase in its visa application fees – the first adjustment since 1978. According to reports from Japan Times, the Japanese government has revised the fees as part of a Cabinet order. This significant change will see the cost of a single-entry visa jump from (approximately Rs 1,950) to ¥15,000 (approximately Rs 9,750), while the fee for a multiple-entry visa will rise from ¥6,000 (approximately Rs 3,900) to ¥30,000 (approximately Rs 19,500). These new rates will apply to all applications submitted on or after July 1.

Why Has Japan Decided To Hike The Visa Fee
As explained by Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi during a recent press conference, this fee adjustment aims to account for inflation and exchange rates that have shifted significantly over the past decades. The government does not anticipate that this increase will drastically affect tourism to Japan.
The additional revenue generated from these higher fees is intended to cover the administrative expenses associated with Japan’s growing foreign resident population, which reached an all-time high of 4.13 million by the end of 2025. The funds will also support the expansion of Japanese-language programs and enhance efforts to manage undocumented immigrants.
What Does This Visa Fee Mean For Indian Travelers
At present, Indian passport holders benefit from a special agreement with Japan, which permits them to apply for visas at a much-reduced fee of Rs 500 due to a mutual arrangement. For now, we will have to wait and see what the visa fee will be for Indian travelers.
