Indians Can Now Pay Using UPI Applications Across Cambodia

Unified Payments Interface or UPI is now finally live in Cambodia! Yes, you read that right. Now Indian travelers can easily make payments in the Land of the Khmer by scanning KHQR codes at multiple merchant locations. The service was launched on June 2, 2026, at an event in Cambodia’s capital, Phnom Penh. The launch of this service was attended by representatives of the Reserve Bank of India and the National Bank of Cambodia. Here’s everything you must know about this launch in Cambodia. 

Indian Travelers Can Now Pay Using UPI In Cambodia

The facility of UPI is now made available at over 4.5 million merchants across Cambodia. It will allow all Indian travelers to pay at all the establishments using UPI-enabled applications. These establishments include restaurants, retail stores, tourist attractions, and more. 

Payments by scanning KHQR codes are set to make transactions easier for all Indian travelers. It will also open new opportunities for the merchants in Cambodia. The UPI initiative can easily be termed as the first phase of broader and better payment connectivity between Cambodia and India.

The second phase will soon be developed, which will focus on a two-way UPI payment system. This two-way system will allow all the Cambodian travelers to easily make payments in India. They will be able to do this using the KHQR payment network.

Digital Payments Are Vital In International Travel

As per a report by Economic Times, this UPI service is a result of a partnership between ACLEDA Bank Plc and NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL). This partnership aims to eliminate carrying cash in large amounts or dependence on car payments, as well as offer travelers a secure payment experience. 

Digital payments are currently an important element of international travel. The launch of the UPI payment system between India and Cambodia is set to make overseas travel way more convenient and easy for all tourists. This launch also promotes the adoption of India’s digital payment infrastructure on a global level.

The Managing Director and CEO of NPCI International, Ritesh Shukla, shared his thoughts on the UPI payments in Cambodia. He said that the launch marks an important step in India’s digital payment infrastructure’s expansion on a global level.
