The government is introducing two new ferries named Kushavati and Salaulim on this busy route. They were launched at the upgraded Betim ferry ramp under the leadership of Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.
The Panaji-Betim crossing is one of the busiest river routes in Goa. It is widely used by daily commuters and tourists.
Officials said that the newly inducted ferries are larger than conventional vessels. With modern, cruise-like features, they are powered by twin 480-horsepower engines and use a hydraulic navigation system, replacing the old manual setup.
Each ferry can accommodate up to 150 passengers and up to 8 cars. With the new, modern ferries on the Panaji-Betim route, traffic movement is supposed to become simpler and faster. The new ferries will cut the travel time in half. Earlier, the journey used to take about six minutes. Now, it takes about three minutes. As the new ferries have improved amenities, the ride will guarantee a more comfortable experience.

Officials said that the initiative is part of the Goa government’s plan to make inland water transport more economical.
