For years, Indian fans watched world tours unfold online while wondering why their country was constantly skipped. Posters announced “Asia Tour” and “World Tour,” but India rarely made the cut. That reality is changing rapidly. From sold-out stadium shows and multi-city EDM tours to fans flying across states just to attend concerts, India is no longer an afterthought in the global live entertainment business. It is becoming one of its fastest-growing markets.
The shift has been impossible to ignore over the past few years. Coldplay packed stadiums, Martin Garrix drew massive crowds, Travis Scott announced India dates, and international artists who once played only one metro city are now exploring multiple Indian stops. Industry leaders believe this is only the beginning.

ToggleIndia Is No Longer Just An “Emerging Market”
One of the strongest indicators of India’s rise has been the scale of festivals like Sunburn Festival. What began in 2007 as India’s answer to global electronic music festivals has now evolved into a cultural movement with nationwide reach.
Over the years, Sunburn has hosted names like Martin Garrix, David Guetta, Swedish House Mafia, Tiësto, Armin van Buuren and Marshmello, helping build a strong EDM culture in India.
Karan Singh, CEO of Sunburn, says India’s position has fundamentally changed. “Today, India stands firmly on the global touring map, not as an emerging market, but as an essential stop for some of the world’s biggest artists.” According to him, audiences are no longer attending concerts casually. They are actively looking for premium experiences, immersive stage production and globally benchmarked events.
Naman Pugalia, Chief Business Officer for Live Events at BookMyShow, said, “India is no longer a wildcard on the global touring circuit, it is now a priority market with one of the most passionate and engaged fan communities in the world. A significant shift in global perception has taken place over the last few years, with artists and touring teams increasingly viewing India as a core stop for large-scale productions rather than an emerging opportunity. We are excited to play a role in shaping this new era of live entertainment and expanding India’s stepping out culture in the process.”

Fans Are Travelling Across India For Concerts
Concert-going in India has also become deeply linked with travel and tourism. Fans are increasingly planning trips around live events, a trend the industry now refers to as “concert tourism.” According to BookMyShow’s entertainment consumption report, over 562,000 fans travelled to another city for concerts in 2025. That movement boosted spending across hotels, airlines, restaurants and local businesses.
One of the clearest examples was Coldplay’s India shows. As per BookMyShow and EY-Parthenon’s findings, Coldplay’s concerts in Ahmedabad generated an estimated economic impact of INR 641 crore. For every INR 100 spent on tickets, attendees spent another INR 585 on travel, food, hotels and shopping.
BookMyShow also noted that nearly 35% of Coldplay’s Ahmedabad audience came from non-metro cities, showing how demand is no longer limited to Mumbai, Delhi or Bengaluru.
Tier 2 And Tier 3 Cities Are Stepping Up
While metros still dominate major concerts, smaller cities are beginning to emerge as serious live entertainment markets. Sunburn says cities like Hyderabad, Guwahati, Shillong and Bhubaneswar are now hosting some of their most energetic crowds. BookMyShow’s data also showed major growth in live entertainment consumption in cities such as Visakhapatnam, Vadodara, Indore and Rajkot.
This expansion is changing how global tours are planned. Instead of limiting India visits to one or two cities, artists are beginning to view the country as a multi-city touring circuit.
Pugalia says the decentralization of live entertainment is one of the biggest shifts happening right now. “India is no longer an emerging market for live entertainment, it is an essential one,” he said.
Bigger Spending, Bigger Expectations
The modern Indian concert audience is also spending more than ever before. Fans are increasingly choosing VIP experiences, premium lounges and elevated hospitality packages instead of standard tickets. BookMyShow reported that premium live entertainment experiences witnessed nearly 2X growth in footfalls recently, signaling a major change in audience behavior.
Karan Singh believes fans today are more intentional about how they spend. “People want tangible value, immersive design, and the assurance that every moment at a show is worth their time,” he explained. This is evident in the scale of recent concerts. Martin Garrix’s Holi performance reportedly attracted around 50,000 attendees, while Alan Walker’s India tour drew crowds exceeding 200,000 across cities.

Infrastructure Is Finally Improving
Industry experts also believe India’s infrastructure has improved significantly, making the country more attractive for international touring artists. BookMyShow says it has been investing heavily in production systems, crowd management, staging, safety and artist infrastructure. The company has also signed tourism partnerships with states including Assam, Telangana and Gujarat to improve concert ecosystems.
The aim is to simplify permissions, improve venue readiness and create globally competitive concert experiences. “Whether it’s Mumbai, Shillong or Hyderabad, the experience needs to support repeat touring,” said Naman Pugalia.
This matters because artists now travel with massive productions involving lighting rigs, moving stages, giant screens and complex logistics. India’s ability to support these requirements is helping it compete with major international markets.
A Cultural Shift Bigger Than Music
Perhaps the biggest change is cultural. Concerts in India are no longer niche urban experiences. They have become lifestyle events and social moments.
BookMyShow noted that over 1.8 million fans attended events solo recently, reflecting growing confidence in independent entertainment experiences. Younger audiences especially see concerts as more than just performances. They are about community, memories and identity.
India’s rise as a concert destination is also being fueled by streaming culture. Today, Indian listeners are among the world’s biggest streaming audiences for many global artists. That digital fandom is now translating into real-world ticket demand.

Summing Up
India’s live entertainment industry is entering a completely new phase. International artists are no longer testing the waters here. They are building larger tours, exploring newer cities and investing in bigger productions.
At the same time, Indian audiences are proving they are willing to travel, spend and show up in massive numbers for world-class experiences. From Sunburn’s nationwide expansion to Coldplay’s economic impact and the rise of concert tourism, the signs are everywhere. India is not just participating in the global concert scene anymore. It is becoming one of its biggest growth stories.
