The Thai Ministry of Public Health, led by Minister Pattana Promphat, made a statement in which this new mandate was announced. He stated that the ministry is evaluating a proposal to make health insurance a compulsory requirement for all foreign visitors.

This new mandate would be a part of a larger effort to strengthen the healthcare system of the country. It also aims to curb the millions of Bahts that are lost yearly to cover unpaid hospital bills. Moreover, it will also ensure that all visitors have access to quality healthcare.

Once officially passed, this new rule, which is currently under review, will apply to international tourists (short-term as well as long-term holidaymakers), foreign workers (seasonal and long-term laborers), cross-border visitors (short-term visitors entering via land borders), and vulnerable populations (people whose citizenship is under review).

Minister Promphat also mentioned that the premiums will be kept at a reasonable level in order to maintain tourist footfall.

Travelers are advised to check for accident and COVID-19 coverage when choosing an insurance. This move is part of Thailand’s larger strategy of positioning itself as a premier medical destination in Southeast Asia.
