Jaipur Metro Phase-2 Project Gets Official Nod From Cabinet

Jaipur Metro

Delhi’s metro system is a hallmark of urban transportation that many other cities in India are looking to follow. And now, after major developments in Mumbai’s metro lines, Jaipur is set to witness a significant enhancement of its metro infrastructure. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the ambitious Jaipur Metro Phase-2 project, which will establish a vital 41 km North-South corridor linking Prahladpura to Todi Mod. This new phase will feature 36 stations and an estimated budget of INR 13,037.66 crore, with the Rajasthan Metro Rail Corporation Limited (RMRCL) responsible for its execution as a joint venture between the Central and State Governments.

This new corridor will connect key areas, including the Sitapura Industrial Zone, VKIA, Jaipur Airport, Tonk Road, SMS Hospital, and other vital locations such as Ambabari and Vidhyadhar Nagar. Notably, it will include underground stations near the airport and will seamlessly integrate with Phase-1, allowing for interchanges and feeder services, thus creating a complete metro network in Jaipur.

Phase 2 Of The Jaipur Metro Will Be Ready By 2031

Currently, the operational Phase-1 of the metro handles an average of 60,000 riders daily over its essential 11.64 km stretch. The addition of Phase-2 is anticipated to significantly boost these numbers, making public transport a more attractive option and easing reliance on personal vehicles.

The Phase-2 project has undergone detailed assessments at various levels, including inter-ministerial discussions and evaluations by the Public Investment Board, confirming its strong economic viability with an Economic Internal Rate of Return (EIRR) exceeding the required threshold of 14%. Funding will be organized through contributions from both state and central governments, additional loans, and international investment, following the 2017 Metro Rail Policy.

Aligned with Rajasthan’s Transit-Oriented Development Policy and national goals for sustainable urban transport, Phase-2 is scheduled for completion by September 2031. This project aims to ease traffic congestion, reduce emissions, and improve mobility for residents and visitors.
