India is widely recognized for its rich culture, traditions, delicious cuisine, and diverse festivals. From UNESCO World Heritage sites to spiritual hubs like Banaras, it truly offers something for everyone. And now, the country has achieved another recognition – not a world record, but a significant milestone in sustainable travel. India has bagged the third spot in Agoda’s Sustainable Travel Survey.
Agoda, a digital travel platform, conducted a survey to measure how sustainability is shaping travel decisions for Asian travelers. According to their 2026 Sustainable Travel Survey, an impressive 77% of Asian travelers now prioritize sustainability when planning their trips, a rise from 68% the previous year.

Thailand took the lead in the survey with 95% of respondents ranking sustainability as a key factor in their travel choices for this year. Following closely are Indonesia (93%), India (88%), Malaysia (88%), and Taiwan (83%). This survey highlights that the focus on sustainable travel is not just a trend; 83% of travelers anticipate that sustainability will remain important to them in the upcoming three years.
India Ranks 3rd In Asia Agoda’s Survey: How Was The Survey Done
With a sample of 1,036 respondents from eight Asian markets, the survey highlights how travelers are increasingly linking sustainability to both environmental care and community support in the destinations they visit.
When asked about the most significant benefit of sustainable travel, the majority pointed to the impact on local communities. About 29% believe it’s crucial that their travel spending supports these communities, while 28% prioritize making meaningful connections with their destinations. Additionally, 27% see the value in preserving natural landscapes and wildlife.
Lastly, as per the survey, Travelers also look forward to seeking experiences that support positive changes. Approximately 35% are interested in tours that promote environmental protection and community support, and nearly half (48%) prefer traveling during off-peak times to lessen crowding.
As climate concerns grow, embracing sustainability is becoming essential for travelers, allowing them to be more mindful while exploring the world.
