How Gen Alpha And Gen Z Are Reshaping Family Vacation Trends In 2026

Gen Z and Gen Alpha

Family vacations have always played an important role in shaping how people travel later in life. For many of us growing up, holidays were simple; parents picked the destination, planned the itinerary, and the kids just packed their bags and showed up excited for the trip. But times have changed, and so have family travel patterns. With new generations growing up in a digital-first world, the way families plan vacations is evolving, too.

After Gen Z transformed how the world travels, Gen Alpha is now beginning to leave its mark. These young travellers are not just tagging along anymore; they are becoming active decision-makers in family travel plans.

Gen Alpha And Gen Z Changing Trends

Gen Alpha Are Becoming Active Decision-Makers In Family Travel Plans

Gen Z has already changed the travel landscape in the past decade. Experiential travel became more popular, people began prioritising unique activities over traditional sightseeing, and social media played a huge role in shaping travel inspiration. Platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok gave rise to an entirely new career path as well, travel vloggers and influencers. Destinations suddenly became viral, and travel started to revolve around memorable experiences that could be shared online.

Now, Gen Alpha, the generation born between 2010 and 2025, is taking this influence a step further. According to a recent report by Hilton, the next generation is actively shaping family travel decisions. In fact, children today are having more say in where families go and what they do during vacations.

Out of around 13,000 travelling adults surveyed by Hilton, nearly 70% of parents who travel with their kids said they choose destinations based on their children’s needs and interests. Instead of parents deciding everything, kids are now a genuine part of the planning process. Many families even allow children to suggest destinations, activities, or attractions they want to experience.

And the influence doesn’t stop there. Food choices during trips are also increasingly shaped by younger travellers. Around 63% of parents said they “always or often” let their kids decide where the family eats while travelling. From choosing a fun café to hunting down a trending dessert spot, kids are clearly making their preferences known.

Hotels are another area where Gen Alpha is making an impact. The Hilton report found that about 56% of families choose accommodation based on kids’ clubs or youth activities offered by hotels. Resorts with gaming zones, creative workshops, pools, or adventure activities are becoming more attractive because they keep younger travellers entertained.

Gen Alpha In India Is Deciding Vacation Spots

The trend is particularly strong in the Asia-Pacific region. Family travel in countries like India and China is increasingly influenced by Gen Alpha and Gen Z. According to the Hilton report, 87% of young travellers in the region actively contribute to planning their family vacations.

The numbers are even higher in some countries. In China, nearly 98% of young travellers are involved in trip planning, while in India, the number stands at around 93%. Across the Asia-Pacific region, about 69% of parents say they choose holiday destinations based on their children’s interests.

That said, parents are still very much in charge of the practical side of planning. While kids might help choose destinations and activities, logistical decisions are largely handled by adults. Dining logistics are managed by parents in 39% of cases, transportation in 38%, accommodation decisions in 32%, budgeting in 20%, and trip duration in 18%.

This shift shows how family travel is evolving. Younger generations are not just passive travellers but are stepping up voluntarily to be a part of vacation planning. In many ways, family vacations in 2026 are becoming more collaborative than ever before. And honestly, that might just make family holidays even more fun.
