Significance Of Shigmo

Historically, it has been celebrated largely by farmers and in the rural communities in Goa to mark the end of the harvest season and the onset of spring.

The festival is symbolic of renewal, hope, prosperity, and communal unity. It usually takes place in the month of Phalgun that coincides with the Gregorian Calendar month of March or April.

How Is Shigmotsav Celebrated In Goa

The festival is a celebration of music, song, and dance, celebrated in most rural as well as urban communities in Goa. During the festival, large crowds witness spectacular performances featuring vibrant floats, dance performances, and other cultural events.

Goa observes two versions of the Shigmotsav: the ‘Dhakla’ (younger) and ‘Thorla’ (elder) Shigmo. You’ll find Dhakla Shigmo celebrations primarily in Tiswadi, Ponda, and Calangute, while Thorla Shigmo is particularly famous in Bardez, Bicholim, Pernem, and Bicholim.

Shigmo commemorates from village centers to grand parades through towns and cities. Locals sing folk songs and accompany it with beats of the dhol, taasha, and kasale. Groups of dancers dress in colorful attire and participate in folk dances like Veeramel, Gade, Gomf, and Ghodemodni. The dances are dedicated to local deities like Shantadurga, Sateri, Ravalnath, and others.

How To Reach Goa?

By Air: Goa has two international airports, Manohar International and the Dabolim International. While the former is located in North Goa, the latter is located in Central Goa. Both airports offer both domestic and international connectivity.

By Rail: Margao, Pernem, and Karmali are some of the most important railway stations in Goa, connecting the state to other states and regions in India by rail.

By Road: The state has an excellent road connectivity to major cities like Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, and more. You can easily get overnight buses and cabs from nearby cities as well.
