You Can Now Cancel Or Modify Flights Without Extra Charges Within 48 Hours, DGCA Says

Cancel Or Modify Flights

Traveling to a new destination by plane can be an exhilarating adventure, offering an experience like no other at altitudes above 30,000 feet. However, one major concern that often arises is the possibility of cancellation and modification fees. While booking a flight is straightforward, unexpected circumstances may require changes, and sometimes, the charges can exceed the original ticket price. However, this is about to change soon. How? Well, on Thursday, February 26, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) announced updated guidelines for ticket refunds, addressing frequent passenger complaints. According to the new rules, travelers can cancel or modify their flight tickets without incurring additional charges within 48 hours of booking, provided certain criteria are met.

Furthermore, if a passenger identifies a name error within 24 hours of booking directly on the airline’s website, airlines must rectify this mistake without extra fees.

For tickets purchased through travel agents or online portals, the responsibility for refunds lies with the airlines, as these agents are considered their representatives. Airlines are mandated to complete the refund process within 14 working days. Additionally, there are now provisions for cancellations due to medical emergencies, granting passengers greater flexibility.

DGCA Announces Look-in Option, But With A Catch

Furthermore, DGCA has announced a ‘Look-in option‘. The introduction of a ‘Look-in option’ allows travelers to cancel or adjust their tickets without incurring fees for 48 hours following their purchase. However, this option is not applicable for flights with departures less than seven days for domestic travel or 15 days for international travel from the booking date.

These updated refund policies aim to streamline the cancellation and modification process and reduce passenger frustration. In light of numerous complaints, particularly following the IndiGo flight disruptions in December, the DGCA has made it clearer that while changes made within the 48-hour window will be fee-free, modifications requested afterwards may incur standard change fees and fare differences according to the airline’s policies.
