What Is A ‘Musical Road’?
First things first, what exactly is a ‘musical road’? It is a road or a section of road, which, when driven over, causes tactile vibrations and auditory response that can be felt through the wheels and body of the vehicle.
Musical roads are a piece of technology that has not yet become mainstream, with only around 40 musical roads existing in the world today.
Also called ‘melody roads’, these can be primarily found in Japan, South Korea, Hungary, China, the USA, Argentina, etc, and now India!
Where Is The Musical Road In India?
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde inaugurated the 500-meter ‘Musical Road’ stretch on the Mumbai Coastal Road on Wednesday, February 11.
It claims the title of being India’s first musical road, situated on the Dharmaveer Swarajyarakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Coastal Road, better known as the Mumbai Coastal Road. This piece of innovative technology stretches from the Amarsons Garden to the Breach Candy stretch of the Coastal Road.
Vehicles traveling from Nariman Point towards Worli will now be able to drive on this section of the road. It has specially designed musical strips that will play the hit song “Jai Ho” from Slumdog Millionaire (2008).
The Coastal Road project is aimed at enhancing connectivity between South Mumbai and the Western suburbs. While the project is planned to be a 29.2-km long corridor between Marine Lines and Dahisar, only about a 10 km-stretch between Marine Lines and the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link is operational as of 2026.
Technology Behind India’s First Musical Road In Mumbai
You must definitely be wondering how a musical road works, aren’t you? Well, India’s first musical road in Mumbai has been engineered using specially designed rumble strips. These have been carved into the asphalt at calculated intervals and depths.
When vehicles travel over these strips at designated speeds – 60 to 80 km/hour for the musical road in Mumbai – the interaction between the vehicle tyres and the surface of the road will produce vibrations.
These vibrations then generate sound waves, with the Mumbai musical road playing the iconic “Jai Ho” song.
What is an interesting feature of this stretch on the Mumbai Coastal Road is that drivers can enjoy the music even when the car windows are rolled up!
The concept of a musical road was first introduced by Japan in 2007, and since then, it has been introduced in many parts of the world.
The musical road introduced in Mumbai combines technology with entertainment, making the experience quite joyful.
