Himachal Pradesh is famous for its breathtaking hill stations, especially Shimla and Manali. While these locations offer stunning views, reaching them can be a bit tricky. The closest airports are in Delhi and Chandigarh, followed by a taxi or bus ride to your destination. Although Bhuntar Airport is in Manali, flights there are limited and often expensive. However, now, to enhance tourist experiences and ease travel, the Himachal Pradesh government has introduced a Shimla Heli Taxi Service. On January 21, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu inaugurated the heli taxi service at the Sanjauli Heliport in Shimla.
This new helicopter service aims to connect the capital city with Kullu, Reckong Peo in Kinnaur, and Chandigarh, providing travelers with a quicker and more reliable option for getting around the hilly state. This initiative is expected to greatly improve accessibility to some of the region’s most remote areas, which are frequently impacted by landslides, snow, and road blockages. By enhancing air travel, the government seeks to make it easier for tourists, residents, and patients needing rapid medical attention to navigate the region.

The Sanjauli Helipad’s proximity to IGMC Hospital will prove valuable in times of medical emergencies. Enhancing air connectivity within the state is a key focus for our government, aimed at boosting tourism.
The Sanjauli Heliport, which cost Rs 15.86 crore to construct, was completed in 2022 but faced delays in regulatory approvals, which were finally granted on August 7, 2025. Now operational, daily helicopter flights can be booked from Sanjauli to Bhuntar and Reckong Peo, with additional services connecting Sanjauli and Chandigarh available three times a week.
These helicopter services, provided under the Government of India’s Ude Desh Ka Aam Naagrik (UDAN) scheme and in collaboration with Heritage Aviation, have capped fares to maintain affordability in this challenging terrain. Some of the ticket prices include: INR 3,169 from Sanjauli to Chandigarh, INR 3,500 from Sanjauli to Kullu, and Rs 4,000 from Sanjauli to Reckong Peo. Additional routes are also expected to launch soon.
