Dr Apratim Goel is the Founder as well as the Medical Director of Cutis Skin Solution Clinic in Mumbai. She is a leading cosmetic dermatologist who has 25+ years of experience in aesthetic dermatology, lasers, injectables, and regenerative medicine.

Unlike many who dream of white coats from kindergarten, Dr Goel’s path to dermatology was a beautiful stroke of luck. Hard work, of course, fueled it all, but getting into cosmetic dermatology was never on her mind. 

With her roots in Mussorie, Dr Goel completed her MBBS from Ballari in Karnataka, which led her to choose Dermatology as her score allowed her to. She went ahead to do her MD in Dermatology at Manipal, which offered her a different environment. 

After completing her studies, she began her practice at a Cosmetic Center and witnessed how much a facial makes people happy. This drew her to Cosmetic dermatology, and later she opened her first clinic, Cutis in Bandra

A Peek Into Some Interesting and Important Questions Related To Travel And Skincare

How do you balance clinical practice with writing, teaching, and international engagement? 

I have hired a wonderful team that helps me manage all these things simultaneously. Another thing that helps me juggle work better is the passion and love towards what I do. There is a saying that goes like, “If you love your work, you’ll never work a day in your life.”

Is applying makeup good for the skin?

There is nothing wrong with applying makeup if you take care of the following things:

  • Remove makeup properly every single day and do your skincare.
  • Hydrate and moisturise your skin well before applying makeup. 
  • Choose the right makeup products according to your skin type and needs. 

What skincare routine would you recommend for someone who’s a complete beginner?

The worst mistake one can make in skincare is not doing anything! Because you cannot leave your skin to the mercy of the city’s pollution and weather. So start with a basic AM-PM routine and continue it for a month. Give your skin 10 minutes, 5 minutes in the morning, 5 minutes in the evening. 

  • Morning: Wash your face and apply a moisturizer that has 50 SPF sunscreen in it. 
  • Night: Wash your face and apply one active product with moisturizer (retinol /salicylic acid/Hyaluronic acid – based on your skin type). 

Most important tip: Have faith and patience in your skincare. 

Can you explain how personalized treatment plans benefit the patient more than standard approaches?

When it’s personalised, the understanding of the skin and its problems is better. We can directly work on what needs attention first. 

How does lack of sleep affect the skin, and what simple habits do you recommend for better skin resilience?

Lack of sleep does affect the body because the body is a clock, and you cannot keep disturbing it. Your body needs 8 hours of sleep, and not any random eight hours; the time must be fixed for every day. Do not confuse your body and its clock.

Which fruits and vegetables are essential for healthy skin, and why?

Make sure your diet has seasonal vegetables and fruits because they help in bringing the necessary nutrition to your body. 

What role does regular exercise play in maintaining good skin health?

Regular exercise is very important. After all, it actually helps your skin because it improves your metabolism and lymphatic drainage. And when I say regular exercise, I mean movement, it can be going to the gym, swimming, or dancing. 

 What tips should we follow to take care of our skin while traveling, especially in places with extreme climates?

  • If you are taking a flight, before the flight, apply a layer of hyaluronic acid with ceramide to prevent in-flight dehydration of skin. 
  • While you are on the flight, make sure you spray a face mist every hour. 
  • Switch your skincare routine to milder and cream-based products. 
  • Put on cream-based masks for half an hour when you get back after exploring the place. 

For adventure travelers, such as trekking or hike, what skincare essentials should be in their kit?

  • Use oxygenating serums. 
  • Apply moisturizer and cover the skin.
  • After returning, use repair serums before sleeping at night.
