Uttarakhand is famous for its enchanting hills and breathtaking landscapes, but it is best known for its important spiritual experiences. The state is home to the revered Chardham Yatra, which includes the holy sites of Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. Each year, starting in April or May, lakhs of devotees flock to these sacred shrines. However, many visitors often become distracted with capturing photos and videos, leading to disturbances and distractions in the peaceful atmosphere. And now, in response to this growing concern, the Uttarakhand government has implemented a ban on the use of mobile phones and cameras within the Char Dham temples.
Officials have noted that the presence of these devices spoils the sanctity of the experience. As a solution, the government has mandated that all visitors must check in their mobile devices and cameras before entering the temple premises.

The Badrinath Kedarnath Temple Committee has been tasked with setting up designated areas for the secure storage of these devices, ensuring that devotees can enjoy their spiritual journey without interruptions.
After visiting the temples, devotees will be free to take photos outside with the temples in view. This initiative aims to restore peace and enhance the spiritual ambiance of the pilgrimage.

What To Know About Chardham Yatra
Uttarakhand, often referred to as Devbhoomi or the “Land of the Gods,” is known for the Char Dham Yatra, which includes four sacred sites: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath, located high in the Himalayas. “Char” translates to four, while “dham” denotes a place of worship in Hindi.
These revered shrines close for about half the year, typically opening during the summer months (April or May) and shutting down with winter’s arrival (October or November). The pilgrimage is traditionally begun at Yamunotri, followed by Gangotri, then Kedarnath, and concluding at Badrinath, ideally in a clockwise manner. Travelers can undertake this journey via road or helicopter services, and some choose the Do Dham Yatra, visiting just Kedarnath and Badrinath. Read our detailed Chardham Yatra guide here.
