Mizoram Travel Guide: Inner Line Permit (ILP) Process, Flights & Train Routes

Mizoram Inner Line Permit Process

To visit Mizoram, everyone except the following requires an Inner Line Permit (ILP):

  • Indigenous persons of Mizoram
  • A non-indigenous female married to an indigenous male
  • Member of the Security Forces with his/her family while serving in Mizoram
  • Regular/Permanent State or Central Government servant with his/her family while serving in Mizoram

Process For Applying Mizoram Tourism Official Website ILP

  • Submit an application (Temporary ILP, Temporary Stay, ILP Exemption) to obtain a Reference Number.
  • Use the Reference Number to track the application status.
  • After verification, applicants may pay the fees online using the Reference Number. Note that no fee is required for the ILP Exemption applicant.
  • After completing the online fee payment, applicants can download their respective passes in PDF format.
  • Pass holders must carry their Photo ID with the respective pass.

The official website states that applicants can submit their application at least 7 days prior to the date of entry. Also note that after submitting the Application Form, you will receive a Reference Number. It is only after your application has been verified that you will be required to make the online payment.

Validity And Documents Required for Mizoram ILP Online

A temporary Mizoram ILP is valid for 7 days. Here are the documents required for the Mizoram ILP:

  • Passport-sized photograph of the applicant
  • EPIC (Voter’s ID) of the applicant

We recommend keeping a government-issued ID with you during your travel to be on the safer side, and don’t forget to maintain a copy of your Mizoram ILP as well!

Mizoram ILP can also be obtained from the Liaison Officers at Mizoram Houses in Kolkata, Silchar, and Shillong.

Reaching Mizoram By Air

Mizoram has only one airport, the Lengpui Airport (code: AJL). However, it is a domestic airport with limited connectivity. The Lengpui Airport Aizawl connectivity is limited to Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Imphal, and Silchar. It is about 32 km away from Aizawl, and you can easily get a shared or private cab to reach the capital city.

Mizoram has recently got connected to a few major regions in the Northeast and mainland India. The Sairang-Guwahati Express is a new express train connecting Sairang in Mizoram to Guwahati, one of the major cities in the Northeast. The train runs seven days a week, covering 494 km in about 13 hours 30 minutes.

The Bairabi-Silchar Passenger is also another train that connects Bairabi with Silchar in Assam. This train also runs on all days, covering a distance of about 103 km in 3 hours 45 minutes.

These two major trains are doing a major task of connecting Mizoram with the rest of the Northeast and mainland India. Despite limited connectivity, tourism in Mizoram is expected to show growth due to these trains.

Getting To Mizoram By Road

Mizoram is accessible by road through National Highway 306 (previously NH 54), connecting Silchar in Assam to Mizoram. Major cities like Aizawl can be accessed from Tripura and Manipur as well by road. There are state-run bus services connecting remote areas within the State but also to interstate services to Silchar, Shillong, and Guwahati from Aizawl. You can also opt for private sumo cabs to navigate within Mizoram with Aizawl as your base.

Travel Advisory For Visitors To Mizoram

Travelers visiting Mizoram must keep certain travel tips, instructions, and advisories in mind, stated as follows:

  • Local taxis and cabs may not always be readily available. Make sure to arrange transport through licensed operators beforehand.
  • Co-ordinate with registered tour operators for accommodation, itinerary planning, and transport plan. They have ample knowledge of the local conditions, shortcuts, reasonable deals, and tips and tricks.
  • Opt for online ILP at least a few days before your Mizoram trip. Carry a printed or digital copy of your ILP for verification at check posts.
