Mumbai’s about to get its second international airport in the form of the much-awaited Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), becoming operational from 25 December, 2025. The airport is one of the most aspirational public infrastructure projects in the aviation industry in India, and is expected to lower the burden on the existing Mumbai International Airport. How The NMIA Is Gearing Up For Inauguration

The NMIA was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 8, 2025. As one of the most anticipated public infrastructure projects in the country, the airport is expected to be a major international airport that will boost air connectivity to Mumbai and surrounding regions. 

The airport is conducting comprehensive Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) trials in collaboration with all stakeholders, including security agencies and airline partners. This is to ensure a seamless and efficient start to large-scale operations. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has also been formally inducted at the NMIA and will be deployed across key airport functions as per official statements.

In the initial phase, the Navi Mumbai International Airport will have a capacity to handle 5 lakh metric tonnes of cargo annually. Along with it, it will handle about 2 crore passengers annually, easing the burden on the already busy Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in the heart of Mumbai.

Navi Mumbai Airport Flight Routes List December 25

IndiGo and Akasa Air will be the first two airlines that will begin operations at NMIA. Along with these two airlines, Air India Express is also expected to begin operations.

The inaugural flight to arrive at the NMIA will be IndiGo flight 6E460 from Bengaluru, scheduled to touchdown at 8 AM on December 25, 2025.

On the other hand, the first outbound flight will also be an IndiGo flight 6E882 scheduled to depart for Hyderabad at 8:40 AM.

The NMIA will connect 16 domestic destinations in the first phase of operations. Out of these, IndiGo will serve 12 cities: Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Goa Mopa, Jaipur, Nagpur, Kochi, Coimbatore, Jammu and Mangalore. Akasa Air, on the other hand, will serve Delhi, Goa Mopa , Kochi, and Ahmedabad from the NMIA. Air India Express, the low-cost airline under the Air India group, will offer 20 daily departures, connecting NMIA to 15 cities within India.

The first phase of operations will focus on 23 scheduled daily departures in a 12-hour operational window. The airport will remain operational between 8 AM and 8 PM in the first month (December 2025 – January 2026), and is expected to scale up to 34 departures by February 2026.

NMIA Flight Schedule and Ticket Prices 2025

Now that we have a glimpse of the expected new routes that the airport will serve, let’s understand a general fare base for these routes.

IndiGo is expected to operate in a fare bracket of about INR 5,000 to INR 15,000 for the routes that will fly on. On the other hand, Akasa Air will operate in a fare bracket of about INR 7,000 to INR 16,000.

Navi Mumbai Airport Code

The NMIA has been assigned the airport code ‘NMI’ as per the code-naming guidelines laid out by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). However, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) code for NMIA is VANM.

Note that the existing Mumbai International Airport will continue to use its ‘BOM’ code, whereas NMIA will use the code ‘NMI’.

When it comes to your tickets, check what code is mentioned on them. Tickets will mention either NMI or BOM on your ticket, so make sure you double check the code on your ticket to avoid last-minute panic.
