India’s First Pod Taxi

Mumbai has an incredible public transport system that includes local trains, metros, buses, rickshaws, and even monorails. Now, the city is planning to introduce a new way to travel. Recently, a meeting led by Eknath Shinde, the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, resulted in the approval of India’s First Pod Taxi that will connect Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Mira-Bhayandar. The government and private companies will jointly operate this new service to reduce traffic problems in these rapidly growing areas.

India’s First Pod Taxi Aims to Ease Congestion And Boost Connectivity

For India’s First Pod Taxi service, the state government has instructed the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to assess the potential of establishing pod taxi networks in Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Mira-Bhayandar, alongside the current project at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). The BKC pod taxi system, known as the Automated Rapid Transit System (ARTS), is projected to cost approximately INR 1,016.34 crore and aims to enhance connectivity in the business hub.

Authorities are planning an automated pod taxi network to improve connectivity along major roads. They have already completed initial surveys and are now inviting private companies to submit detailed technical and financial proposals for the project. Officials assure that the municipal corporations will not bear any direct financial costs, facilitating a smoother approval process for implementation.
