India To Host 2030 Commonwealth Games; Ahmedabad Set To Be The Host City

Commonwealth Games

The Commonwealth Games are one of the world’s most renowned and prestigious international games, and in 2030, India is set to play the role of the host country! For those unversed, India last hosted these games in 2010, and will host the games again in 2030 – the second time in 20 years! While the last time Delhi played the host city, the Executive Board of Commonwealth Sport has recommended the name of Ahmedabad as the host city in 2030. Here is all the information you need to know about the 2030 Commonwealth Games!

Is Ahmedabad Hosting 2030 Commonwealth Games? Here’s What We Know!

A Bid Between Ahmedabad (India) And Abuja (Nigeria)

The Executive Board of Commonwealth Sport recommended Ahmedabad as the host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games. However, the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly will make its final decision in Glasgow on November 26, 2025.

While Ahmedabad has been submitted as a host city from India, Nigeria has also submitted its bid by submitting the name of Abuja to the evaluation commission of the Commonwealth Sports governing body. However, reports hint that Abuja has been dropped from consideration, citing the city’s less efficient infrastructure in comparison to Ahmedabad as the reason for this decision.

Luckily, Ahmedabad stands a solid chance –  almost a confirmed bid as the host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, mainly due to its recently developed infrastructure. The city is home to the Narendra Modi Stadium, the largest of its kind in the world. It has a capacity to seat 1,32,000 attendees at once! The stadium last hosted the Cricket World Cup Finals in 2023, and the stadium definitely grabbed headlines for its efficient management, world-class design, and modern amenities.

Process Of Recommending Ahmedabad As The Host City

The recommendation of Ahmedabad as the host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games followed a detailed process that was overseen by the Commonwealth Sport Evaluation Committee.

It assessed candidate cities against a wide range of criteria such as technical delivery, athlete experience, governance, infrastructure, and alignment with Commonwealth Sport values. Both Ahmedabad (India) and Abuja (Nigeria) submitted compelling proposals as per reports that were framed according to the Commonwealth Sport’s ‘Games Reset’ principles.

These principles are designed to encourage candidate cities to collaborate with innovation and have been used while submitting proposals by both the potential host cities.

India At The Commonwealth Games Over The Years

India and Ahmedabad’s recommendation represents a major landmark moment for the country in the Commonwealth Sport Movement. As the most populous country in the Commonwealth, India has had an illustrious history tying it to the Commonwealth Games. It finished fourth on the medal table at Birmingham 2022.

Its most successful stint at the games was when it was hosted in India itself. At the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games, India showed its strongest performance, winning a whopping 101 medals and finishing second that year! As of 2025, India’s total medal tally stands at a record high of 564. This total medal tally ranks India as the country with the fourth highest medal tally among all Commonwealth nations!

Moreover, the 2030 games are about to be even more special as they will mark the centenary of the inaugural event held in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930. If things fall in place and India successfully hosts these centenary games, the moment will be a major milestone for India on the international stage.

Summing Up

Getting to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad will determine the future of international sporting events in India. For instance, if India gets the hosting rights for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, it will also stand a good chance of hosting the 2036 Olympic Games, also in Ahmedabad. While a final announcement is awaited, Ahmedabad, thanks to its developed infrastructure for a sporting event of this magnitude, stands a fair chance of serving as the 2030 host.
