Tracing The Inception Of DIFF

Filmmakers and longtime Dharamshala residents Ritu Sarin and Tenzing Sonam started DIFF in 2012 with the main aim of bringing independent cinema to the Himalayan region. The two wanted to encourage local filmmaking talent and foster an impactful cultural platform for local voices to shine through.

Today, it stands as one of India’s leading independent film festivals, attracting cinephiles, audiences, and filmmaking talent from all over the world. DIFF is known for its bold and adventurous programming and its cutting-edge films that provoke and challenge the conventional. Today, it has fostered a large network of filmmakers, film professionals, and other professionals who make independent South Asian cinema what it is today.

DIFF is known for its bold and adventurous programming that enriches knowledge and understanding of societies, cultures and ideas. Its cutting-edge films provoke questions and discussion on issues that are relevant and current, and address universal themes of human experience.

Bringing filmmakers to the festival has been a constant priority for DIFF and its large network of alumni filmmakers and film professionals includes the majority of key independent filmmakers working in South Asia today.

The Covid-19 pandemic made the festival go online between 2020 and 2022, but it became a physical event again, starting from 2022. Now, the festival is set for its 2025 edition, details of which are mentioned below.

About Tibetan Children’s Village: The Dharamshala International Film Festival Venue

Tibetan Children’s Village has served as the backdrop for DIFF for several years now, and this location in Upper Dharamshala has a glorious history to its name. The village was established as a nursery when 51 children arrived from the beautiful region of Tibet as refugees on May 17, 1960. What began as a nursery evolved into a small village with its own school and homes. In fact, today, it serves over 16,000 children in different locations throughout India.
