When traveling by air, passengers usually carry electronic devices such as chargers, batteries, and power banks in their cabin baggage, which stays with them during the flight. These items are not allowed in checked luggage, which is given to the airline at the check-in counter. However, Emirates Airline, the leading airline of the UAE, has recently announced a new policy: starting from October 1, 2025, the use of power banks will be prohibited on their flights. This means travelers will no longer be able to use power banks on board Emirates flights from that date. Read on to know more.

A power bank is a compact, rechargeable device that serves the purpose of supplying power to various electronic devices, such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, and cameras. Emirates has updated its regulations regarding the carrying and usage of power banks for its passengers. According to the new guidelines effective from October 1st, travelers are allowed to bring one power bank on board, subject to the following conditions:

1. Passengers can bring only one power bank with a maximum capacity of 100 watt-hours.
2. It is prohibited to use power banks for charging personal devices during the flight.
3. Power banks cannot be charged using the aircraft’s power outlets.
4. All power banks must display their capacity ratings.

Why Is Emirates Airline Banning The Use Of Power Banks

Following a thorough safety evaluation, Emirates is addressing the risks posed by power banks aboard its flights. The usage of power banks has surged in recent years, leading to a rise in lithium battery-related incidents in the aviation sector.

These devices typically use lithium-ion or lithium-polymer batteries, which function as portable chargers for electronic devices. These batteries operate by allowing lithium ions to move between two electrodes through an electrolyte solution. However, if they are overcharged or damaged, this can cause a dangerous phenomenon known as ‘thermal runaway,’ where heat build-up cannot be controlled, potentially leading to fires or explosions.

While many advanced devices include safety features to prevent overcharging, basic power banks often lack these protections. To enhance safety, Emirates now prohibits the use of power banks during flights, ensuring they are stored in accessible locations for prompt action by cabin crew in case of an emergency.
