Mumbai Plans Ropeway Over Aarey Forest Linking JVLR Metro To Film City

Ropeway

To boost tourism and increase ridership at the Aarey-JVLR metro station, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) has proposed a ropeway project connecting the station to Sanjay Gandhi National Park via Film City.

The initiative aims to ease road congestion and improve accessibility at the Aarey – JVLR metro station. The MMRC is responsible for constructing, operating, and maintaining the Mumbai Metro 3, also known as the Aqua line. While parts of this line have been operational since October 2024, low ridership is a concern. The new ropeway system is designed to benefit both tourists and daily commuters, helping them avoid traffic congestion at locations such as Dindoshi and Yashodham Junction on the General Arun Kumar Vaidya Road, commonly known as the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road.

A senior MMRC official shared details about the proposal, highlighting the development of a ropeway system that would link the Aarey Metro Station with Film City, potentially extending to Sanjay Gandhi National Park. This initiative aims to enhance connectivity to Film City, a key hub for employment and tourism, while addressing current limitations in public transportation options and road congestion.

The Ropeway Will Have The Capacity To Transport Approx 2,000 To 3,000 Passengers Per Hour

The planned 3km ropeway aims to expand the commuting options available beyond the Aarey-JVLR Metro Station, crossing the hilly landscape of Aarey. The final details for the project are still being finalized. The project is designed to cater to daily commuters, tourists, and industry professionals while minimizing land acquisition and environmental impact. It aligns with the MMRC’s goal of promoting integrated transport, reducing congestion, and improving access to major destinations through innovative urban mobility solutions.

According to reports, the planned ropeway will have the capacity to transport between 2,000 and 3,000 passengers per hour in both directions. The MMRC is currently evaluating three types of cable technologies – mono-cable, bi-cable, and tri-cable detachable gondolas before making a final choice. After this evaluation, the corporation intends to issue a bid for the project, which will be executed through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) using the Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer (DBFOT) model. Stay tuned for more updates!
