Ashwini Vaishnaw Announces 2.7 km ‘Breakthrough’ in Mumbai–Ahmedabad Undersea Tunnel

India’s bullet train initiative achieved an important milestone with the successful completion of the initial segment of the 21-kilometer undersea tunnel linking the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) to Thane. This particular stretch, which spans 2.7 kilometers, represents a significant advancement in the ambitious project.

Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced this achievement on social media. Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw referred to this as the “first breakthrough” in the construction of the tunnel. Ashwini Vaishnaw shared images showcasing the nearly finished segment, stating, “We have reached the first milestone with the 2.7 km of the undersea tunnel for the bullet train project.”

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor represents India’s inaugural bullet train route. It is being developed using advanced Japanese Shinkansen technology. This project is set to revolutionize rail travel by enabling speeds of up to 320 km/h. This would allow passengers to travel from Mumbai to Ahmedabad in roughly two hours.

Japan will also introduce its next-generation E10 Shinkansen trains on this corridor, debuting simultaneously in both countries. The E10, Japan’s latest bullet train, will replace the E5 series and will operate outside Japan for the first time on India’s 508-kilometer high-speed route, boasting enhanced safety features and remarkable speed capabilities.

To date, engineers have constructed 310 kilometers of viaducts, 15 river bridges, and five of the planned twelve stations, with three more stations close to completion.

The BKC station in Mumbai is particularly noteworthy, being built 32.5 meters underground. Its foundation is designed to support a 95-meter-high building above. This makes it one of the most intricate transit hubs in the country.

Simultaneous work on laying tracks, installing overhead electrical systems, and establishing operational and signaling infrastructure is also currently underway.
