When you think of the Queen of Hills, the beautiful trekking trails and the peaceful Mall Road immediately bring Mussoorie to mind. Nestled in Uttarakhand, Mussoorie is easily reachable from Delhi, Dehradun, and other northern cities, making it a popular vacation spot for both summer and winter getaways. However, the rise in tourism over the years has disrupted the tranquillity of the area. To address the overwhelming crowd and traffic congestion during peak travel times, the Dehradun administration is considering a pre-registration system for visitors.
According to a report by the Times of India, this new system would mean that travelers must register before arriving in Mussoorie. Those who don’t register won’t be allowed entry at the checkpoints. This decision comes after noting that the number of visitors surged, almost doubling between 2022 and 2024.
An official mentioned that the pre-registration system will only be in place during the busy seasons to help manage long traffic delays. Cameras will be set up at three main entry points: Kimadi, Kempty Fall, and Kuthal Gate.

Officials from the tourism department discussed this plan in a meeting on 4th July, Friday. To register, travelers will need to provide their contact number, vehicle details, and group size, among other information. The process will involve receiving an OTP on the registered mobile number.
Once registration is complete, a QR code will be generated, which vehicles must present to gain entry into Mussoorie. Automated Number Plate Recognition systems will be used for screening, and those without a valid QR code will not be permitted to enter.
In 2024 alone, more than 2.1 million tourists visited Mussoorie, and reports of significant traffic jams during peak seasons have become increasingly common.
