Dwarka Expressway To Get India’s First AI-Driven Traffic System To Detect Violations

Dwarka Expressway

If you think that artificial intelligence (AI) is only good for creative tasks, planning trips, rewriting texts, or helping with university assignments and research, this news will blow your mind. The Dwarka Expressway in Delhi is set to receive India’s first Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) powered by artificial intelligence. This innovative system, developed by the Indian Highways Management Company Ltd (IHMCL) and implemented under the supervision of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), aims to enhance highway safety and improve law enforcement.

The recently launched Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) on the Dwarka Expressway represents a major leap forward in India’s approach to traffic control. This innovative system is equipped with cutting-edge high-definition cameras that can detect 14 distinct types of traffic violations. It’s designed to help reduce accidents, detect violations as they happen, and ensure quick emergency responses. The ATMS is now active along a 56.46-km stretch, which includes the entire 28.46 km of the Dwarka Expressway and an additional section of NH-48 from Shiv Murti in Delhi to the Kherki Daula Toll Plaza in Gurgaon. However, fines for violations have not yet been imposed.

It’s worth noting that the cameras are expected to capture around 600 violations each day, which will be reported to the police in Gurugram and Delhi.

How Does The AI System On Dwarka Expressway Work

This system utilizes artificial intelligence to detect stalled cars or accidents, sending alerts to the relevant authorities in real-time. There are 15 advanced gantries on the expressway equipped with technology that tracks over-speeding, wrong-lane driving, and whether seatbelts and helmets are being used. These violations are linked to the NIC e-Challan platform for quick online enforcement.

Additionally, a Command & Control Center near the Bijwasan Toll Plaza oversees emergency responses through a centralized app. The center keeps video footage for 180 days and monitors staff accountability. The ATMS not only addresses current traffic issues but also provides valuable data for future infrastructure planning.
