Konkan Railways Plans To Launch RoRo Service From Kolad to Goa, Offering Seamless Car Travel

RoRo Service

Are you planning a trip to Goa soon and considering the beautiful Mumbai-Goa road trip, but worried about traffic jams? We have exciting news for you! The Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd (KRCL) is working on a new Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) train service that will transport private vehicles between Kolad, Maharashtra, and Goa, with plans to launch it before the Ganpati festival around August 27th. This service is similar to their current RoRo operations for freight between Kolad and Mangaluru.

With this new train service, passengers can take their cars or SUVs on the train while staying inside them, making it a more relaxing option compared to the Mumbai-Goa highway.

Here’s How This New RoRo Train Service Works

Travelers will drive to Kolad, which is about 106 km from Mumbai, load their vehicles onto specially designed train wagons, and then ride to Goa by train. This initiative aims to cut down on fuel usage, improve road safety, and provide a chance for travelers to rest during their trip. To make this happen, adjustments to existing RoRo wagons, safety measures, and necessary regulatory approvals will be needed.

KRCL is looking to conduct a trial run by August 27th, with a target of at least 40 cars per trip to ensure the service is financially feasible. This project supports eco-friendly travel by reducing emissions and lessening congestion on National Highway 66, providing significant advantages for tourists, individuals with second homes, and families who prefer road travel.

The Konkan Railway line spans 741 kilometers, connecting Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Goa, and showcases breathtaking landscapes of the Western Ghats, including waterfalls, serene rivers, flowering valleys, and rugged mountains.

If successfully implemented, this idea could greatly ease road traffic during the busy festive season, particularly given the popularity of the Mumbai-Goa route during Ganesh Chaturthi.
