Uttarakhand is home to numerous pristine hill stations, but one that stands out is Mussoorie. Often referred to as the “Queen of Hills,” Mussoorie is famous for its breathtaking winter sunsets, scenic hikes, and vibrant Mall Road. It is also a popular winter destination. To reach Mussoorie, travelers usually make Dehradun their first pit stop. From there, it typically takes about 1.5 hours to drive to Mussoorie. However, this journey is set to change. The Dehradun to Mussoorie Ropeway is scheduled to launch in 2026, making the trip even more convenient.
The Dehradun to Mussoorie Ropeway project is progressing rapidly and is set to be completed by 2026. Once it opens, travelers will be able to reach Mussoorie from Dehradun in just 15 minutes, significantly cutting down the usual road journey that can take between 1.5 to 2.5 hours, especially during peak seasons.
The ropeway will cover a distance of 5.5 kilometers, while the road trip is 33 kilometers long. It will feature automatic passenger trolleys with automatic doors, capable of carrying 1,300 passengers per hour in one direction.
Dehradun To Mussoorie Ropeway Will Be Operational All Year Round
The ropeway connecting Dehradun to Mussoorie will offer visitors stunning views of the mountains and is anticipated to boost tourism earnings in Uttarakhand while generating jobs in Purkul village.
Developed through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) and costing INR 300 crore, this project aims to reduce pollution and provide a reliable travel option that can be used throughout the year. The ropeway will function effectively in various weather conditions, ensuring that tourists can access it even in rainy or snowy weather.
In addition, a multi-level parking facility with 10 floors is being built in Purkul village, near Dehradun. This structure will have the capacity to hold over 2,000 vehicles and will include amenities such as cafeterias and restrooms for visitors. Construction is also underway on the approach road to the upper terminal at Gandhi Chowk in Mussoorie, with the foundation work set to begin soon.
