India’s Largest Cruise Terminal Opens In Mumbai

Largest Cruise Terminal

The Mumbai International Cruise Terminal (MICT) officially started its operations on 21 April, Monday, as announced by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways. Touted to be the largest cruise terminal, it is built to accommodate up to 1 million passengers annually. The cruise terminal will allow around 10,000 passengers daily. It can handle five ships at once, with a draft of 11 meters and a maximum length of 300 meters.

With a total investment of INR 556 crores, this modern and largest cruise terminal is expected to greatly enhance maritime tourism in India. The construction for this ambitious project began in 2018. However, it has now finally opened in 2025 after various challenges and funding issues. The terminal is operated under a public-private partnership. The private companies Ballard Pier Port Private Limited and J M Baxi & Co are responsible for its daily management.

The Largest Cruise Terminal Can Manage Over 500 Cruise Ships

The facility covers 415,000 square feet. It is designed to manage over 500 cruise ships and one million passengers each year, supported by 72 immigration counters. It features a ground-plus-three layout where the lower levels are meant for passenger processing. Meanwhile, the upper floors are designated for commercial and recreational spaces. The building is equipped with 22 elevators, 10 escalators, and parking for 300 cars. Mumbai Port Authority also intends to open the upper levels for public use to create a lively waterfront destination even when ships are not present.

At present, Cordelia Cruises operates from Mumbai twice a week, and officials anticipate a significant increase in cruise traffic as more Indians show interest in sea travel. Presently, about 300,000 Indians take cruises each year, mostly abroad. With this new terminal, international cruises can now start from Mumbai itself.
