About The Blue Origin All-Female Crew
Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin has been a pioneer when it comes to making commercial spaceflight more accessible. The company was founded by Jeff Bezos in 2000 after the success of Amazon but it only began commercial spaceflight in 2021, 21 years after its inception. Since then, the company has managed to fly 58 people to space.
Most of these people have been high-profile individuals with significant social capital, the likes of which include YouTubers, business leaders, media personalities, and tech entrepreneurs, among others.
With its latest mission, the company decided to launch an all-female crew into space. It is after more than 60 years that a human spaceflight has gone into space without a male crew.
The crew for the all-female mission was led by Jeff Bezos’ fiancee and journalist Lauren Sanchez. Along with her, the crew also included American pop star Katy Perry. Not just that, but the crew also included film producer Keriann Flynn, planetary scientist and activist Amanda Nguyen, former NASA engineer and STEM entrepreneur Aisha Bowe, and journalist Gayle King.
The All-Female Blue Origin Mission
Blue Origin, owned by Jeff Bezos, decided to send their New Shepard rocket to space in this all-female crew. The rocket took off from West Texas in the United States of America on a suborbital journey. This journey took them 65 miles (105 kiometers) above Earth. They reached the Kármán Line – considered to be the boundary line separating Earth’s atmosphere from outer space.
Katy Perry, along with other crew, experienced a few minutes of weightlessness and were able to see Earth from their spacecraft. She also carried a daisy flower in honor of her 4-year old daughter. The women managed to click a picture together in the spacecraft that is now going viral on the internet as you read the article.

This space mission was the first all-female spaceflight since June 16, 1963. This was when Soviet Union’s Valentina Tereshkova set out on a three-day mission to Earth’s orbit. Tereshkova managed the mission herself, making the Blue Origin mission the first-ever multiperson human spaceflight not to feature any male crew member.
Blue Origin has not publicized information about the cost of the entire mission and has also not disclosed any ticket prices as of April 2025. So far, the company has only launched space missions featuring prominent personalities. However, it aims to boost space tourism in the coming years – making it accessible to a lot more people.
